Exclusionary criteria for dysuria

  • Fever >38°C (>100.5°F).
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. (Slight tenderness over the bladder area is not an exclusion.)
  • Diabetes.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Immunosuppression.
  • Catheterization or other urologic procedure in the last two weeks.
  • Discharge from a hospital or nursing home in the last two weeks.
  • Treatment for a urinary tract infection (UTI) in the last two weeks.
  • Symptoms present
    > seven days.
  • Symptoms of vaginitis: vaginal discharge, vaginal irritation.
  • Recent or persistent urinary stone disease.
  • Chronic renal or urologic abnormalities other than stress incontinence.
  • Gross hematuria in women aged >50.
