Feature Story

The CAP Foundation is looking into its crystal ball to identify the future role of technology in anatomic pathology. Its Futurescape conference, “Technologies Designing the Future of Anatomic Pathology,” will address AP diagnostics in the digital age. It will be held June 9–10 in Rosemont, Ill.

From corporate visions (IBM, GE, and Siemens) and Wall Street projections to the views of practicing pathologists, the program promises a critical look at the forces shaping anatomic pathology. Topics will include projections from Fortune 100 companies entering the diagnostics market, hyperspectral imaging, whole-slide imaging, computer-aided detection, histopathology at the nanoscale, and the “S” curve phenomenon. In addition, NightHawk Teleradiology will review how technology changed radiology services and what lessons this holds for pathology.

Pathologist speakers will include Bruce Friedman, MD; Ronald Weinstein, MD; Dennis O’Malley, MD; Richard Levenson, MD; Michael Feldman, MD; Kenneth Bloom, MD; and Richard Friedberg, MD, PhD. Guest speakers include Hemant Roy, MD, Evanston Northwestern Hospital, and Vadim Backman, PhD, Northwestern University. Invited corporate presenters include Richard Bakalar, MD, chief medical officer of IBM Healthcare and Life Sciences; Michael Montalto, PhD, GE Global Research; Erhard Schnapka, PhD, Siemens Medical Solutions; and Douglas Johnson, NightHawk. William Bonello, Wachovia Securities, will provide the Wall Street perspective on where venture capitalists are putting their money.

Dedicated to the memory of William R. Dito, MD, the conference will be held at the Westin O’Hare Hotel, located near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Offering extensive time for discussion with colleagues, the meeting will also feature technical exhibits and demonstrations. This conference is the first in a series of sessions offered by the CAP Foundation to advance the knowledge and use of cutting-edge technology by pathologists.
