In memoriam: Eleanor B. Sinton, MD 1922-2004

Eleanor B. Sinton, MD, CAP governor from 1981 to 1988, died March 28.

Dr. Sinton was director of clinical laboratories at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colo., for more than 20 years. Her professional interests were laboratory management and teaching, clinical pathology, and computer applications.

She was the chair of many CAP groups in the 1970s and 1980s, including the Laboratory Management and Planning Committee, Workload Recording Committee, Task Force on Professional Laboratory Management Institute, Planning and Priorities Committee, and the councils on Education and Publications, Quality Assurance, and Accreditation and Standards. She also headed up the National Autopsy Data Bank Ancillary Committee and the Commission on National Autopsy Policy.

She was a member of other CAP groups, among them the Council on Pathology Practice and Council on Government and Professional Affairs. She won the CAP 1981 Frank W. Hartman Memorial Award for meritorious service to the CAP.

"Eleanor Sinton was a scholar and a lady. She was only the third woman ever to serve on the Board of Governors when she began her service in 1981," and she paved the way for other women to make their notable contributions to pathology, says former CAP president Herbert Derman, MD.

"Eleanor entered debates with good humor and intelligence. Hers was a warm and kind personality, generous to a fault with her friends and the families of her fellow governors," Dr. Derman recalls. He describes her as a "deep well who only showed her colleagues laughter and devotion to the College."

Dr. Sinton received her MD in 1947 from the University of Colorado, Denver.
