On top of the acquisitions by GE, Siemens, and Hologic, many other mergers in the diagnostics industry have been announced in the past year and a half.
- Inverness Medical Innovations Inc. acquired BioSite Inc. in March for $1.58 billion. BioSite makes the widely used rapid diagnostic test Triage.
- Quest Diagnostics acquired Swedish point-of-care test developer HemoCue for $420 million.
- Becton, Dickinson and Company bought TriPath Imaging Inc. for an estimated $350 million.
- Beckman Coulter, which lost a recent bid for BioSite to Inverness, bought chemiluminescence developer Lumigen Inc. for $185 million. It had acquired the immunoassay provider Diagnostic Systems Laboratories Corp. in 2005.
- Roche Diagnostics announced it is purchasing 454 Life Sciences, which specializes in gene sequencing, for $140 million.
• Olympus America Inc. acquired virtual microscopy firm Bacus Laboratories and molecular diagnostics firm Gene-Ohm Sciences.
- 3M Corp. purchased Acolyte Biomedica Ltd., a British maker of rapid microbiology products, and announced it had formed a new medical diagnostics division.
- The German firm Carl Zeiss MicroImaging announced it will acquire the instrument systems division of cancer diagnostics developer Clarient Inc. for $12.5 million.
