In-house expertise July 2001 At the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, where the surgical pathologists meet daily, "It’s left up to the discretion of the individual pathologist to bring to the conference cases where they have a question or want a second opinion," says Dr. Jonathan Epstein. That system works in large part because of the department’s openness to showing cases. "We recognize we have a lot of experts within our systems, and that it is foolish, if we have questions on a case, not to avail ourselves of that expertise. So we tend to show a lot of cases. And if it’s a case none of us can resolve, then we’ll get an outside opinion." |
