January 2017—Hardy Diagnostics announced its new product, C Diff Banana Broth, which is recommended as a selective detection broth for the recovery of Clostridium difficile from environmental samples. Its name is derived from the color change reaction when C. diff is present; the broth changes from a deep red, indicating a negative reaction, to a milky yellow, indicating a positive reaction.
C Diff Banana Broth is ideal for verifying the efficacy of the hospital infection control cleaning procedures, according to a company statement. The formulation’s specificity was found to be 100 percent with a sensitivity of 88 percent. This selective and differential medium is suitable for recovering both Clostridium difficile spores and vegetative cells. The broth needs no pre-reduction or special anaerobic equipment and results are available in as few as 24 hours.
