September 2015—This year’s meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry saw soaring temperatures in the host city of Atlanta and a lofty number of attendees. Nearly 18,000 laboratory professionals took part in the five-day extravaganza, which featured hundreds of educational sessions and poster presentations, along with 720 exhibitors that filled the expo floor. A selection of company news released at the meeting is included in this special section.
Keynote presentations highlighted the disruptive effects of transparency in health care, how nucleic acids in plasma offer a treasure trove of diagnostic and clinical applications, and the potential of genetic findings to slash the risk of heart disease and improve detection and treatment of infections. Meanwhile, 780 attendees each donated six tubes of blood for use in the AACC’s Universal Sample Project. The project established a sufficient set of serum/plasma samples from healthy adults to enable IVD companies to directly compare the 99th percentile between troponin I assays and develop a universal cutoff concentration. Donations were shipped daily to the CDC.
