COVID-19 proficiency testing

April 10, 2020—The CAP has released a new proficiency testing program for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 by nucleic acid amplification testing.

Members of the CAP Microbiology Committee piloted the program with a set of laboratories before making it available. Committee members and CAP staff were able to verify specimen performance across the multiple methods and testing platforms.

The PT program provides samples that are noninfectious and target consensus gene regions N, E, RdRp, S, and ORF1a. With this program laboratories can assess their entire workflow from nucleic acid extraction through detection.

“The CAP’s Microbiology Committee quickly came together to develop this high-quality program,” said Raouf Nakhleh, MD, chair of the CAP’s Council on Scientific Affairs.
