New chapter in digital pathology

February 2024—Advancements in whole slide imaging, integration of AI, and global collaboration networks are three areas the new president of the Digital Pathology Association highlighted in his first communication with DPA members this year.

Michael Quick, Hologic’s vice president, research and development, oncology and cytology, said whole slide imaging has seen “incredible improvements” in quality and speed, and further advancements in WSI technology are to be expected this year. “This means faster, more efficient, and higher-resolution imaging,” he wrote in his Jan. 4 email. Advances in regulatory clearances in the U.S. and abroad are also expected, he said, “while we collaborate with regulatory bodies to ensure equal access to patients around the world.”

In the area of artificial intelligence, “significant leaps” can be expected this year in how AI integrates with digital diagnostics to provide real-time insights and decision support for pathologists, he said.

And the power of digital pathology lies not just in technology but in connectivity, Quick said. “This year, we’re excited to foster global networks, connecting pathologists, researchers, and clinicians worldwide. These collaborations will accelerate knowledge sharing, research, and advancements in patient care.”

The DPA’s 2024 Pathology Visions meeting will take place Nov. 3–5 in Orlando.
