Rapid test for Ebola, 9/15

The BBI Group developed, in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, a rapid test for Ebola that is in the process of being verified to allow EUA submission. Using lateral flow technology, BBI’s assay will make testing simpler and quicker than assays that require technical infrastructure. The AtomoRapid platform reduces the number of components in the kit, simplifying the process for users while lowering the risk of user error and cross-contamination. With minimal training, local health care teams can complete the test at bedside and have a result in 20 minutes. Field data suggest the assay could be used as a negative agreement rule-out test and screening method. The company is aiming for a third-quarter launch following regulatory approval.

A second version of the test will be evaluated in combination with the Novarum DX Smartphone Reader; users would be able to read and share test data using smartphone technology. This development could allow instant connectivity of patients and field workers with medical experts, while also taking advantage of built-in Global Positioning System capability to track and monitor the disease.
