In support of infectious disease diagnostics and public health

June 2026—CAP TODAY publisher Bob McGonnagle spoke on March 12 with Jessica Van Allen, PhD, technical support lead for ZeptoMetrix, and Jesse M. Young, PhD, medical director for TriCore Research Institute’s research and clinical trials department and director of point-of-care testing. Dr. Young is also clinical assistant professor at the University of New Mexico.

Read the article:

Bob McGonnagle: Dr. Young, tell us about TriCore and the laboratories you oversee.

Dr. Young (TriCore): TriCore Reference Laboratory is a full-service diagnostic laboratory. The core laboratory offers about 2,900 test codes and has a modality similar to that of Labcorp and Quest, but we’re focused on New Mexican populations. We serve most of the hospitals in the area and have statewide collection sites whereby we’re trying to expand health care and provide coverage for our communities so everyone in the state has access to health care near their home instead of having to drive six hours to the nearest collection site, drive home, and then be called back for a critical value. Bob McGonnagle: Thermo Fisher launched last fall the SwiftArrayStudio, a next-generation microarray analyzer that will support genomics research and clinical applications through the use of laboratory-validated and -developed tests. Ravi Gupta, what motivated the development of this analyzer?

Ravi Gupta: The SwiftArrayStudio resulted from listening to customers. It addresses the scientific and operational pressures observed in modern genomics. I call them the real-world needs. For decades, labs across human predictive genomics and agrigenomics have dealt with persistent challenges in workflow complexity, inconsistent turnaround times, and escalating costs. Bob McGonnagle: Jessica Van Allen, I’d like to talk about some of the hot topics in molecular infectious disease testing, and you mentioned in our discussions offline that viral load testing for transplant viruses is becoming ever more important in the field. Can you make a few remarks about that?

Jessica Van Allen, PhD (ZeptoMetrix): There’s testing that is done using laboratory-developed tests and testing performed using FDA-cleared assays. Those are the two big buckets of testing in the labs of our customers. Meghan and I attended a conference recently at which a couple of the speakers talked about viral load testing for common transplant viruses—EBV, CMV, VZV, some adenoviruses. We’ve been playing in that field for a long time in terms of molecular controls for viruses, so they’re products we’ve had on the shelf. Continue reading …
