Updated CLSI standard on newborn screening, 10/13

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute has released an updated edition of its standard NBS01-A6 (replaces LA04-A5), “Blood Collection on Filter Paper for Newborn Screening Programs; Approved Standard-Sixth Edition.” This document contains new information and insight for personnel on the essentials of correctly collecting a high-quality specimen, handling the specimen after it has been collected, transporting it to the testing facility, and sorting the residual specimen that remains after laboratory testing.

Horizon and Riken sign distribution deal, 9/13

Horizon Diagnostics has signed a distribution agreement with Riken Genesis under which Riken will become the sole distributor of HDx’s molecular reference standards in Japan. Riken Genesis offers genomic products and services to a range of research institutions and corporations and is a CAP-accredited laboratory for genome analysis services.

Clinical study for GI panel, 9/13

BioFire Diagnostics has begun clinical and analytical studies at several hospital-based laboratories in the U.S. to evaluate the company’s FilmArray gastrointestinal panel. BioFire plans to seek CE IVD marking and FDA clearance for the test.

Small-volume tube system, 9/13

The Eppendorf Tube 5.0 mL system, from Eppendorf North America, handles volumes up to 5 mL. The tubes feature a snap cap for single-hand operation and a compact conical design, removing the risk of contamination associated with manipulating small volumes in large tubes.
