September 2026—Though it may test the memory of many, there once was a time when HER2 immunohistochemistry was a relatively uncomplicated matter. Back in September 1998, the FDA approved both trastuzumab (Herceptin) and the first companion diagnostic assay, HercepTest, which was used to determine whether patients with metastatic breast cancer could receive the new drug.
September 2026—When Heidi Rehm, PhD, and other researchers examined more than 1.5 million diagnostic sequencing test results from 19 clinical laboratories, they found an astonishing rate of inconclusive reports due to variants of uncertain significance—nearly a third in diagnostic multigene panel testing.

December 2024—Illumina announced it will release TruSight Oncology 500 v2, a new version of its flagship cancer research assay to enable comprehensive genomic profiling. The assay is under development; a worldwide release is planned for midyear 2025. TSO 500 v2 assesses hundreds of genes across all variant classes, as well as immuno-oncology biomarkers, in a single assay from one sample. Features of the new version include a faster turnaround time and reduced hands-on time; sensitive variant calling and improved coverage of difficult genomic regions; and new kit configurations with 50 percent less packaging, 70 percent fewer tubes, and improved usability.
