July 2026—When Neha Gupta, MD, attended a fellowship fair early in her second year of residency, she was caught off guard by the number of programs already accepting applications from her peers. It was only March, and she had been told she could apply for her fellowship in late summer.
July 2026—An International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer panel provided recommendations in 2020 on how to process lung cancer resection specimens and define pathologic response after neoadjuvant therapy. They were intended as guidance for clinical trials but offered as a suggestion for good clinical practice.
July 2026—Open a new high school. Bypass the insurers. Take a broad definition of health. Bring core services in-house. That is some of what Northwell Health CEO emeritus Michael Dowling did while spearheading Northwell Health’s expansion during his 23 years as president and CEO of what is today New York’s largest not-for-profit health care provider and private employer. Dowling stepped down in October 2025; Northwell executive vice president John D’Angelo, MD, succeeded him.
July 2026—Grading of papillary urothelial carcinoma can sometimes be challenging because it requires categorizing discretely a continuous spectrum of tumors. In the view of Lara Harik, MD, discovering biomarkers that can predict progression would be an ideal solution for papillary urothelial carcinoma, especially for tumors that are difficult to grade. “Maybe the use of cell-free DNA in the near future,” she said, “could reveal which of these tumors are at risk for progression.”

July 2026—Being able to distinguish the subset of patients with stage IV colorectal cancer who have a chance at cure with ablation or resection from those who do not has been the aim of two University of Chicago physicians who developed a biomarker for colorectal liver metastases called PersonaCRC.
July 2026—Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) with hypermutation is most commonly associated with DNA mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency; however, defects in DNA polymerase proofreading represent an important alternative mechanism. Recognition of POLE-driven hypermutation has diagnostic and therapeutic implications, particularly in microsatellite-stable CRC.
July 2026—A medical student walks into the CAP annual meeting for the first time, nervous and not sure what to expect. She’s there because of a Medical Student Travel Award she almost didn’t apply for. By the end of the week, she has an interest in pursuing pathology. That is what the CAP Foundation had in mind when it began in 2018 to offer that student travel award. Now, for the first time, after an analysis of CAP Foundation data and a long-term survey of past recipients of that award and others, we have the data to report their impact.
