July 2026—Sepsis is a major cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is difficult to measure the number of pediatric sepsis cases since most estimates are based on administrative codes, and coding practices vary by institution. Medical record review offers greater accuracy in recording pediatric sepsis diagnoses, but it is labor intensive and subject to interrater variability.

July 2026—Hepatoid lung carcinomas, similar to hepatoid carcinomas of other sites, are defined as extrahepatic tumors exhibiting divergent hepatocellular differentiation. Uniquely, hepatoid carcinomas of the lung are reported to commonly express only HepPar1, which recognizes the mitochondrial enzyme carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase-1 (CPS1). HepPar1/CPS1 was recently found to accumulate in lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) harboring STK11 mutations, presumably as a genotype-associated metabolic adaptation.

July 2026—Parkinson’s disease, which is characterized by loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain’s substantia nigra and the pathologic misfolding and accumulation of alpha-synuclein, can result in a range of motor and nonmotor symptoms that may vary by individual. The cardinal motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) are bradykinesia (slowness of movement), resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. A prodromal phase of the disease can generate nonmotor symptoms, such as a reduced sense of smell years prior to the onset of cardinal motor symptoms.

July 2026—Apollo is a health care-scale multimodal foundation model designed to integrate longitudinal clinical data into unified virtual patient representations. It was developed by the authors using data from a major U.S. health care system and trained on approximately 25 billion clinical records from 7.2 million patients that spanned more than three decades. The data set incorporated 12 medical specialties and 28 clinical modalities, including pathology images, laboratory testing, clinical documentation, medications, and structured electronic health record data.
