Hear an expert discuss how Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is utilizing
the oncoReveal® Nexus 21-gene panel to redefine turnaround time and actionable insights
in cancer care. Dr. Ewalt shares a perceptive look at the clinical need for rapid, front-line NGS sequencing, and how a unique, purpose built targeted NGS panel (Pillar Biosciences’ oncoReveal Nexus 21 gene Panel) was developed, validated and implemented clinically by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK-REACT) to complement their current comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) approach.

Webinar presenter Mark Ewalt, MD, Associate Medical Director for Laboratory Operations for Diagnostic Molecular Pathology in the Molecular Diagnostics Service, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, MSKCC.

Learn about emerging field, tissue phenomics

Sept. 15, 2014—This symposium in San Francisco, Oct. 17-18, will examine a a big data approach to biomarker discovery and clinical assay diagnostic assay development in oncology that Munich-based Definiens is calling tissue phenomics. Speakers include Definiens co-founder and Nobel Laureate Gerd Binnig, PhD. Learn more.

QC for quantitative viral load assays

Aug. 8, 2014—In this white paper, SeraCare Life Sciences notes that “every laboratory must ask what are the appropriate [quality control] goals and what are the most cost-effective ways to achieve these goals.” The paper reviews how often to run controls, how many replicates to run, and covers useful ways to plot assay QC in real time. Read.

Webinar: Nonconforming event reporting

Aug. 8, 2014—Randy German, MT(ASCP), blood bank and laboratory quality manager at Hoag Memorial Hospital, will share best practices for nonconforming event and blood product deviation reporting and investigation in a 50-minute webinar hosted by Nouvation, maker of occurrence-tracking software. German will review regulatory requirements, discuss what should be reported, and explain effective root-cause analysis in a blame-free culture. To register, fill out this contact form and note your interest in the Sept. 24, 2014, webinar in the question field

Free online genomics conference

Aug. 6, 2014—A two-day online conference Aug. 20-21 will cover a wide range of topic in genetics and genomics, such as RNAi, next-generation sequencing, genotyping, and molecular diagnostics. The meeting—sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific, Beckman Coulter, Roche, and other firms—will feature interactive, live streaming video sessions and a virtual exhibit floor. Faculty includes experts from MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dartmouth, and Stanford. Free CME, CE, and CEU credits are available. Register.

IL workshops hit hot topics at AACC

July 10, 2014—Instrumentation Laboratory is presenting two, hour-long educational sessions at the AACC’s Annual Meeting and Clinical Lab Expo. The first will feature Ted E. Warkentin, MD, and Pau Bruguera, PhD, on clinical and laboratory aspects of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia diagnostics (register). In the other workshop, Sharon Ehrmeyer, PhD, MT(ASCP), will talk about how to develop and implement individualized quality-control plans in POC testing (register).

ATHENA trial—an interview with Thomas Lorey, MD

June 2014—The Food and Drug Administration on April 24 approved use of the Roche Cobas HPV test as a primary standalone screen for cervical cancer in women 25 and older. CAP TODAY writer William Check, PhD, asked questions of Thomas S. Lorey, MD, medical director, TPMG Regional Reference Laboratory, Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Their questions and answers follow. For a discussion of the ATHENA data on which the FDA based its decision, see Dr. Check’s June story “Data spark new directions in cervical cancer.”
