August 2026—Testing for homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) is not for the faint of heart. Even the experts agree. Tricia Numan, MD, says that when she first became involved in the topic, “I didn’t realize how many components went into HRD testing,” including germline alterations, somatic alterations, and various classifications of genomic instability.
August 2026—In a summer of more ticks, more diseases, and more tick species expanding to new areas and bringing diseases with them, what Bobbi Pritt, MD, MSc, would like to see are more—and better—diagnostics in early Lyme disease. Laboratory scientists are inching toward improved solutions, though nothing is commercially available now. “I’m cautiously optimistic. I wouldn’t say I’m excited yet,” says Dr. Pritt, co-director of vector-borne diseases laboratory services and chair of the Division of Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

December 2023—Quest Diagnostics and Scipher Medicine announced a collaboration designed to expand patient access to diagnostic services for rheumatoid arthritis. Under a multiyear collaboration, Quest will provide RNA extraction and next-generation sequencing services for Scipher’s PrismRA test, a blood-based molecular signature response classifier aimed at predicting a patient’s response to TNF inhibitor therapy. Quest will enable specimen collection at about 7,300 patient access points and more than 2,100 patient service center locations, as well as courier services that transport patient specimens between Quest and Scipher laboratories and provider sites.
