FDA clears test for CHD events, 3/15

March 2014—The Food and Drug Administration cleared a screening test that predicts a patient’s risk of future coronary heart disease events, such as heart attacks. The test is cleared for use in all adults with no history of heart disease, but studies submitted by the company and reviewed by the FDA show that the test is better at discerning this risk in women, particularly black women.

March 2014—The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute has published a new document, “Planning for Laboratory Operations During a Disaster; Approved Guideline (GP36-A).” The document provides guidance for laboratory and health care leadership for development, implementation, and sustainment of effective emergency preparedness plans (all hazards) supporting nonanalytical components of clinical and public health laboratory services that may pertain to various natural and manmade disasters.

Quest, CDC collaborate to improve hepatitis care, 3/15

March 2014—Quest Diagnostics will collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify trends in screening, diagnosis, and treatment for four strains of viral hepatitis in the U.S. Under terms of the multiyear contract, Quest will provide CDC researchers with analytics expertise and access to the company’s national Health Trends database of de-identified clinical testing hepatitis data.

Cell-Chex Auto is a three-level spinal and body fluid control for evaluating the accuracy and precision of hematology instruments that measure blood cell counts in patient body fluid samples.

Histamine ELISA kit, 3/15

March 2014—Enzo Life Sciences’ Histamine ELISA kit provides a quantitative detection method for measuring histamine in human, rat, mouse, and canine samples. Because of histamine’s potent role in the immune response, it is present in a transitory state in the body and can only be measured within minutes of release. The half-life of histamine in a biological system is four minutes before its conversion to n-methyl histamine.
